Had nothing to do today so I decided to watch House of Wax. Don’t get me wrong I was expecting the usual slasher film, and that’s the problem. It’s exactly what I got, minus creative slaughter or interesting psychology.
The “origin” of the killers is revealed. But their motives aren’t. Sure, mom was intent on making a whole town of wax, but why would a mistreated child and his sibling subject to his parents’ hatred for his brother, would want to carry on momma’s dream?
And killing Paris last? She did nothing except stand around all movie long. Well at least she gets to die. Not really in a pleasant way, but also totally and utterly preposterous. A giant toothpick slung through the head from a distance is neither possible, nor (and I’m trying not to use “entertaining”) interesting. Now a death by a thousand tiny incisions that might have happened moments earlier in the movie, that would send shivers down my spine.
On the other hand, the gore level was decent. And by that I mean not excessive. I don’t understand the need for gore, a horror movie aims to frighten and create tension, no to disgust.
Whatever happened to the psychology of horror movies? Ordinary (if you don’t count the looks) people in extreme situations. Now that’s what I want to see. Not the same bunch of no-brained people in their twenties running around without a clue. One reason I kind of liked The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning was the dynamics between brothers. Something I did not see in House of Wax. There was an interesting parallel between the twins on either side of the conflict building up in the first half of the movie. Alas nothing more than an idea.
Nowadays you put a killer in a mask and somehow you’re under the impression you’re giving birth to the next Michael Myers. Poor, misguided fools…

After an awkward start, and some rather self-conscious posts, that didn’t know where they were headed or whether they wanted to go anywhere, I can safely say (that is until my next change of heart) I know what I want to do, to write, to “talk” about. And that is nothing.Well, not exactly nothing, but you know, the meaningless banter that engulfs all that is pop culture. From who would win in a fight between superheroes to whether Shawshank Redemption or The Godfather should hold the number 1 spot on IMDb (neither if you ask me), from how the Beatles still have an influence on today’s rock to what other long dead TV show should get a cinematic update (I say bring Adam West back as Batman under the direction of Joel Schumacher in Batman & Robin mode).

Worst post ever.

But first and foremost these are all opionions, no matter how condescending or arrogantly stated they may be. And as opinions I expected them to be the matter of discussion (and by that I probably mean thrashing) among civilized and polite people (and by that I mean rude, obnoxious know-it-alls).
All that said, I leave you with the prospect of this turning from fledgling blog into a fully fleshed entertainment site in the distant (very distant) future (and that would be as soon as I decide to get off my bum and write the code).
