The Art of a Successful Trailer

trailer

Trailers are the backbone of the movie marketing campaigns. The trailer is the one thing that actually gives us a preview of he movie, and making it is as much film-making as anything.Leave it to the boys in charge of the trailer to see exactly what scenes to show and what music to use, to make a movie appealing to a broad audience.

It’s a understatement that sometimes trailers have proven better than the movie they promote, but it happens, and sometimes, and this is mostly the case with comedies, a trailer can look amazing, yet the movie feels stale, because the best parts of it have already been seen by hundreds of thousands, maybe millions.

Take for instance the trailer for 21(2008).It features fast-paced action, cool music and humour. What the movie had?A slow pace, uninteresting characters and a plot that you’ve seen a million times before(not to mention all unveiled in the trailer, aside from one “twist” if you can call it that at the end).

Of course that is not the case with all movies. And I’m not just talking blockbusters, you know the kind the studios get really involved because they have a lot of money riding on their success.Sometimes, a carefully chosen track, orchestrating some carefully chosen scenes that really don’t ruin the movie can be very effective. As is the case with this year’s yet unreleased Pineapple Express.
